Scout Shooting in DevonIn 1911, the Scout Association was given two trophies by HRH Duke of Connought to award for shooting and these have continued into use in the modern day with the National Scout Championships being held at Bisley, the home of target shooting. This year, Mid Devon District Scouts joined North Devon District Scouts in sending teams to compete in the various disciplines. These range from Full-bore Rifle at 300m, small-bore rifle, 10m and six yard air rifle and pistol to field target. Over 700 scouts took part with teams from all over the country including Cornwall, Somerset, Avon and Dorset
The high spot of the event was the winning of the Junior Connought Shield by the 1st North Devon ( Barnstaple) team of Jack and Dean Bale and Ryan Hough who had to shoot in both six yard pistol and rifle as well as Field target to win. Not to be outdone the North Devon District Team of Craig Attwood, Luke Smith and Kirstie Anne Attwood retained the National 3P title. (3P consists of 20 shots prone, 20 shoots standing and 20 shots kneeling and is based on an Olympic shooting discipline). Individual medals were also won in smallbore, Sporter air rifle, Olympic Air Rifle, 6yd Rifle and not to be outdone one of the leaders Jayne Attwood made the Olympic final for 10m Pistol finishing in 6th. The North Devon Scout Full-bore Championships were shot alongside the nationals and this was won by Jacob Maddans of Taw Explorers Devon as a County is taking part in the Scout Inter-County Championships in March 2010. Last year the Devon team finished in 2nd place and we want to get 1st place this year. If you have any Scouts who want to be considered for the team please contact the ACC Activities and he will put you in touch with the team managers. |
