Application stage is still open!

We invited Scouts who were in Devon to apply for the opportunity to be part of the Devon Scouts Contingent going to the EIJ in August 2012. We have reached our 25 applicants, but we will try and apply for more places, but getting these 25 places was a challenge.

Places were limited and went quickly - they were like gold dust!

There were only 25 Scout places and we already have 25 registered, but you could still apply as we can request more tickets and keep our fingers and toes crossed for you. You would need to apply swiftly and get your deposit of £50 to us. You can register on this website - see Register your interest.

The Leadership Team:

We have five Contingent Leaders in our Crew who will be attending plus several support ones staying in Devon helping with accounts, other admin, media, catering and training.

The team will be headed by an experienced Leader, Jim Green (North Devon). He is a District Nights Away Adviser, active Scout Leader, Campsite Warden and previous contingent leader to the last EIJ. We have also approached several Leaders as backup. We have 8 adults/leaders who wish to join us on top of the confirmed team. If you have a skill to offer then please get in contact with us via the registration page.

What if we don't know anyone or are new to this?

Don't think you are the first to think it. We are all one big family in Scouting but can be daunting for any age. We therefore will be running for the Leadership Team and the Scouts who will be attending the EIJ some sessions to meet each other and also to have a low level training camp. This will allow the Scouts and Leaders to develop as a unit and refine skills, as well as learn new ones. This will also test existing and new equipment. We will also allocate each person (Leader and Scout) specific roles, tasks and responsibilities. Who sets up which tents, or prepares the barriers around our camp or sets up the flagpole etc. And down to the nitty gritty of who sets the tables on which days, to collecting water; to who organises the transport. Dates for these are 20-21st April and 22-24th June and the  EIJ cost includes the training camp fees.

Cost:

The price is a difficult one to gauge as we have to factor in four key things:

  • Transport costs - do we go by train, coach or minibus?
  • How many Scouts are attending?
  • How many Leaders we need to take for ratios and also for allowing comfort, safety and general welfare
  • The costing of training camps.

The price should workout to be about £300 per Scout. This will include fees, transport and food/drinks for all attending. We can advise applicants of the final cost if it exceeds £330 giving you a final decision point, but we plan to keep it below £320. We recognise that parents and carers need a cut off point and need to know limits, as do the Scouts. We aim to keep the pricing as low as possible, but still keep the magic.
We are also aware that financial times are difficult for many, but you can fundraise, gain sponsorship and apply for grants to get help if needed. Please ask re grants, fundraising etc and we can signpost you to some help and ideas.

What next?

Register your interest on our on-line form.

A non-returnable deposit of £50 needs to be paid to secure your place once you have registered your interest. Details of how to do this will be given to you after registering your interest.

We can not have more than 5 leader and 25 Scout places as that is the amount EIJ have allocated to us - so we cannot take all applicants. However we will try to apply for more places for us if we get additional interest in time.

Finances:

The payments can be paid in instalments, but deadlines for certain amounts must be met within the time frames set - see our newsletters for details. Please note if you are accepted, that your £50 deposit is non-returnable as this is given to the EIJ organisers.

Fundraising - we do aim to do some in the form of supporting Scouts and Leaders who may need financial or resource assistance. For example if more than one from the same family going, if they need the loan of a suitable holdall etc. We can offer advice and signpost you to sources if you contact us in plenty of time.
