  1. Apologies:

Terry Porter (Torbay)

  1. Communication.

It was noted that less than half the Districts were represented at this meeting, although apologies had been received from the majority.

The Scouts at Woodlands were asked about their preferred method of communication, and not many use the County website. Social webpages are more popular, although Leaders tend to use the website more. Steve from the Media team wants to encourage use of the website, and the media team will turn up to events and publicise them. We need to encourage more articles and events to be published, and these can be sent to the County Media contact, Steve Hagger (media@devonscouts.org.uk )

  1. Media team

David Moate raised the topic about messages and events not getting through to our young people, and there had recently been an example of a Troop not hearing until too late about a well-publicised County event. The members present felt that each District should supply to David 2 e-mail addresses to help the information being passed to the Troops. Please supply David with these 2 email addresses ASAP.

  1. County Cooking Competition

This is being held on Sunday 29th January at 1st Bovey Tracey Scout HQ. 5 teams are taking part from East Devon, Mid Devon and Teignbridge, and the top 2 teams will be invited to represent the County at the Regional competition being held in Gloucestershire on Sunday 25th March. The County Media team will be present to record this competition.

For information, the 2013 County event is likely to be held at the end of January 2013, with the Regional Final being held in March 2013.

  1. The Annual Aero Camp

This is being held at Belle Vue Airstrip. The entry form will be posted on the website. So far 5 Troops had expressed interested in attending. David Moate explained that places were very limited, and this year there would be more explanation given as to the details of the camp with the entry form. There had been a couple of meetings with the pilot’s representative, and it is hoped that a “log book” would be issued to participants. It was felt that although the event was very good “value for money”, we need to keep the costs down for the participants. Please note this is a Scout Section event and all participants must be of Scout age at the date of the event.

David Moate to publish entry forms on web-site

Since the meeting, the pilot’s representative has contacted David stating that the date of the camp needs to change, and the new CONFIRMED date is the weekend of 25-27th May.

Note change of date of event!

  1. The Essex International Jamboree (18-25th August 2012)

David Moate has applied for 25 Young Peoples places and 5 Leader places for this Jamboree, and is on the “waiting list”. We should know soon if we have been allocated any places, and if so, these can be used by Troops within the County. Troops will need to act quickly if we are able to send a contingent, and the cost is likely to be in the region of £300 per head. (The Jamboree itself is charging £175 per head) David will inform all about the decision as soon as possible. 1st Fremington Scouts are hoping to attend and it may be possible to share transport costs with them. (Contact there is Jim Green at fremingtonskip@googlemail.com .) This is an ideal opportunity for a number of Troops to join forces and experience a fantastic event.

Since the meeting, David has been informed that Devon Scouts have been allocated 25 YP places(aged 10-17) and 5 Leader places. Further information about the Jamboree can be found at http://www.eij.org.uk/ . Please let David know AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if your District wish to take up these or some of the places. The Jamboree requires a deposit of £50 per participant to be paid by the end of February!

  1. Woodlands (21-23 September 2012)

Brian Roberts has agreed to co-ordinate this event. The cost has not been finalised with Woodlands, but is likely to be in the region of £15-£16 per head, a small increase on last year. A discussion took place regarding merchandise for the event, and Steve Michaels agreed to look at the cost of providing all participants with a “Woodlands Woggle”. This would be a cost effective and unique method of marking the event, and Troops would be able to wear their own neckerchief with the woggle.

Since the meeting, Steve has come back with a price which would add less than 75p per head to the cost of the camp.

  1. Chief Scout’s Gold Award Presentation Day

For health reasons, David Moate had to postpone the 2011 event, and the meeting asked David to suggest alternative dates. The format of the last event was thought to be successful, and this would be used. There will be activities in the morning, lunch, followed by the Award Presentation itself. The recipients will be able to choose if they wish to attend for the whole day or just the presentation itself. David told the meeting that the North of the County is keen to host the event.

Since the meeting, the date of the Annual Aero Camp has changed, and therefore it is most likely that this presentation day will be held in October. David to co-ordinate this event.

David also issued a list of all the recipients he had been notified of. Please check your District list and inform David of any new names. It will also be very helpful if the application form is filled in “on-line” at the following url:
