Social Camp Feb 2011

Devon’s Explorers and Leaders arrived at Caddihoe Camp site on 25 February 2011 to the Social Camp, the aim of the camp was to help get the Devon County Camp Site ready for this years camping season for all members of Devon, they arrived on Friday evening and chilled out.

When they awake on Saturday morning to hear heavy driving rain on the tent the enthusiasm waned. They did however set to work and the walls in the cottage were washed and painted and the original colour's discovered, (the kitchen's white). At the same time some outdoor types ventured into the driving rain and cleared the footpaths, drains, filled pot holes and seriously trimmed a couple of bushes. The spirits rose during the day as the rain eased. The Explorers achieved many of the tasks. In fact the only thing they failed at was setting fire to the timbers and bushes they had cut down. Still after a bit of leaders know how the fire was started. During the weekend the 26 volunteers all worked hard, were fed well and made lots of new friends. The next one is being planned for the summer to help take develop the camp site into a facility that Devon can be proud of and the young people want to come to.

Alex the warden said "it was great that the young people who use the centre were willing to come and help look after it"

One Explorer was heard to say "this is like slave labour, but at least we get well fed".

Thanks to Steve, Fiona and Nigel who stepping in to run it after the ACC  went sick.

The next one is being planned for later on in the season to try to improve the site and its facilities. The County would like to thank the Explorers and leaders who came and helped over the weekend, with a number of the Districts represented. Well done and we know the young people will remember the wall and bushes they helped maintain. A couple showed us the bit of the toilet or barn they had painted when they attended the jamboree selection weekend,

WELL DONE DEVON, KEEP IT UP
