Back to Basics Weekend October 22

Date: 18th Nov 2022 Author: Scout Websites

Saturday 1st October saw the inaugural back to basics camp for leaders at Watcombe Scout Campsite in Torquay, Devon. This is the first time for many years that this style of camp has been run here in Torquay and leaders from across Devon were in attendance.

The idea of the camp was to teach basic camping skills for new leaders or to upskill leaders to become confident in running their own camps for the young people in their sections. They have pitched (and slept in) a variety of typical scout tents.

They had first experience of using knives and axes to prepare for fire, made feather sticks for transferring fire and used flint and steels to light it.

After a well-earned dinner, new games were played and a night hike experienced with cake before bed.
Saturday night was wet and windy overnight and waterproofs were the order of the morning. Fires were lit and breakfast cooked on wood which was very tasty. Task allocation was discussed, basic camp first aid learnt and the task of pitching a tent blindfolded ensued. This allowed important learning of differing leader styles within a small group and the importance of everyone having a voice. Fixing camping equipment, sharpening axes and what to have in a tent spares box was also discussed, then the important task of dropping dry canvas before packing up camp.

Big thank you to Andy Spalding, camp warden at Watcombe for giving up his time, experience and knowledge this weekend and to Sam Powell and Fiona Gage for helping facilitate.

Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
