Manager & Supporter (M&S) training

What training do I need to do?

Congratulations on your exciting new role. We fully understand that training isn’t high on your agenda right now but here is what you need to know. Always remember any experience can be used if it is relevant to the criteria, your Training Adviser or support (TA) will be able to help you here.  Much more detailed information can be found in the Manager and Supporter Adult’s Personal File. If you don’t have a copy, speak to your TA, line manager, contact us or download one here! The Scout Association & Devon County Scouts is committed to providing adequate support, ensuring you can deliver your role, allowing you and the young people you work with get the best Scouting experience possible.

M&S training is divided into 3 phases.

• Getting Started.
• Training for all roles.
• Manager core skills.

Like leadership training the getting started section must be completed within 5 months, and the whole woodbadge must be completed within 3 years of starting your role.

Training for all roles

M&S Core skills


This section is slightly different as it is split into 7 core skill subjects. Training is supported by online independent learning videos, workbooks and three face2face or online skills courses. To discover more about each skill, how the training is delivered and what criteria is needed to validate it please click the headings below.

Validation of this section is with a Manager & Supporter Training Adviser/supporter who will guide you through the whole process.

Manager & Supporter roles that require additional training

Roles include District Explorer Scout Commissioner, District Scout Network Commissioner, Assistant District Commissioner (section), Assistant County Commissioner (section), Assistant County Commissioner (Scout Network)


As per Policy, Organisation & Rules (POR) you are expected to have validated all required training within 3 years of starting your role. We anticipate that many of you will complete your validations well within this timescale.

Manager and supporter skills training courses are supplied across the region and in some areas online. Check out regional availability here!

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
