What training do I need to do?
Congratulations on your exciting new role. We fully understand that training isn’t high on your agenda right now but here is what you need to know. Always remember any experience can be used if it is relevant to the criteria your learning support assessor will be able to help you here. The Scout Association & Devon County Scouts is committed to providing adequate support, ensuring you can deliver your role, allowing you and the young people you work with get the best Scouting experience possible.
M&S training is divided into.
• Growing Roots
• First Response.
• Manager core skills (optional)
Growing Roots must be completed within 6 months.
You can complete an optional woodbadge for your M&S role, extending your skills and knowledge.

Growing Roots
- Online training via My Learning {Growing Roots}
First Response
- All youth facing roles require a 6 hour First Response course or higher. {More details here}
M&S Core skills (optional)
This section is slightly different as it is split into 7 core skill subjects. Training is supported by online independent learning videos, workbooks and three face2face or online skills courses. To discover more about each skill, how the training is delivered and what criteria is needed to validate it please click the headings below.
The seven core skills are:
- Managing Time and Personal Skills (LMM)
- Achieving Results (LMA)
- Providing Direction (LMP)
- Working With People (LMW)
- Enabling Change (LME)
- Using Resources (LMU)
- Safety for Managers and Supporters (LMS)
Validation of this section is with a learning support assessor who will guide you through the whole process.
